Webinar: The first universal sustainability certification scheme for the mining sector and beyond

On 22 September 2020, Dr Andreas Hucke, Nadine Kohl, Lukas Förster and Knut Hirsch were joined by more than 70 representatives from along the entire raw materials value chain to explore the topic of certification and sustainability in mining and beyond.

In an hour-long discussion, participants explored the role of technology, confidentiality and real-life application in raw materials certification and how CERA is working to streamline and simplify the method for ensuring the sustainability of exploration, extraction, processing, manufacturing and the final product.

This marks the first in an ongoing series of webinars that CERA will lead on sustainability and certification in raw materials, working closely with the CERA partners (including CONFEDEM, LTU Business, Montanunversität Leoben, RISE, Savannah Resources, TÜV NORD Cert, Universiteit Leiden).

Audience participation was lively and varied, driving the conversation into progressive and perennial areas of discussion for certification. Some of the question topics included the difference between CERA standard and existing databases; the application of the CERA standard to SMEs; CERA’s work with conflict minerals on the African continent; and certification training led by CERA.
